We have curated a few awesome digital resources to help you on your reo journey. However, there are heaps more resources out there and we encourage you to do some rangahau (research) and find what works best for you.

Clutha District Libraries Māori Collection

Te Reo, purakau (stories), mythology, tikanga (cultural practices), biographies, history. Delve into the libraries Māori Collection. We have books about, for, and by Māori at all of our libraries, as well as a dedicated space for Māori content in the Balclutha Library. You can find te reo Māori stories on our digital resource LOTE 4 kids. This website can be a great way to start learning a new language, no matter what age you are. Just enter "Clutha District Libraries" in the top left corner, enter your library barcode, then find "Te Reo Māori" from the list of languages. https://lote4kids.com/te-reo-maori/

Websites

https://www.reomaori.co.nz/ is a website dedicated to the education and celebration of te reo Māori. This is where we get many of our resources that you see in our libraries including kupu postcards, ‘Give Te Reo a Go’ booklets, and colouring print outs for kids.

https://kauwhatareo.govt.nz/ is a central online hub for te reo Māori resources, that will make teaching and learning in te reo Māori, fun, easy and relevant for teachers, learners and whānau.

The Taringa Podcast aims to help you learn about te ao Māori (the Māori word) in a fun and relaxed way.

On the Up to Speed with Te reo Māori podcast Stacey Solomon helps you get 'Up to Speed' with some common Māori words and phrases heard in media, public addresses, and everyday conversation in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Apps

Kupu is a Spark sponsored app which allows you to use the camera on your phone to insistently translate objects into te reo. It is available on IOS and Android.

On the Tipu Te Reo Māori app Koi is your teacher, and she has an innovative Personalised Progression Memory which allows her to remember what words and phrases you know and which ones you need a little extra testing on. This ensures that you are learning as quickly as possible. Available on ISO and Android.

In the Aki app you paddle your waka and escape the taniwha by learning and identifying words and phrases. Finish one level with six dots, then start the next level with a whole new set of words. Once you’ve completed all four levels, play them again and challenge yourself to complete the levels in the quickest time possible with the fewest mistakes. Challenge your friends and family to play and compare their progress and achievements. Available on ISO and Android.

The Drops app has over 45 languages you can learn, and te reo Māori is now one of them! It is a strongly visual and easy way to pick up new vocab words. It's a really user-friendly app that uses multiple language learning techniques and repetition to help you learn at your own pace. You can commit to as little as 5 minutes a day to start filling your kete kupu (basket of vocab knowledge). A free version is available on ISO and Android.
